culture : Narbonne, ville ouverte aux arts

Vladimir Cosma
His music haunts the memory of French cinema… Cosma’s first visit to the city of Charles Trenet, eleven years ago, was to the sound of the International Brass Quintet Competition. The composer Vladimir Cosma has since been true to the music of Narbonne.

“For me, Narbonne was above all the city of Charles Trenet. At the beginning of my career I had the opportunity to work with him on a record. So when I first came to Narbonne, I immediately went to visit his house; one of his great sources of inspiration.”

I left my native city at the age of 23. I had to start all over again, but I am still attached to the atmosphere and the folklore of Rumania. This is why I am always moved by people like Trenet, who remain faithful to the places they grew up in. For Trenet, the dream of every artist came true: that his work would endure. La Mer, Que reste-t-il de nos amours?… The melody is the most important thing; it’s a bit like the main theme in a book.

During my first two stays, I got to know the city’s most prestigious locations: Salle des Synodes in the Archbishops’ Palace, wonderful Fontfroide Abbey, the Narbonne Theatre and its outstanding acoustics.”
